What I Like about Art and Design Day

I am writing about Art and Design Day and what I liked about it because it was so much fun! At Art and Design Day you can participate in fashion revue, favorite foods, arts and crafts, and engineering; you also can do posters, photography, garden and plant design, communications and so much more. Other 4-H families should come because there are a lot activities for kids that are not participating and there are so many things you can enter if you are.

Art and Design Day was fun and enjoyable. You get to see all the amazing things everyone worked so hard to make. There is even a robotics table. When you decide you want to present at Art and Design Day the judges ask questions about how you made it and then they judge you on your work. It sounds scary but it was easy and you can win ribbons. If you do fashion review you will learn how to model your clothes and go up on stage. I had a lot of fun and I plan to go again.

What a 4-H Member Thinks About the Multicultural Baking Project

Did you know that Surfside 4-H had a multicultural baking project? It was a one day project that was seven hours long and we learned about baked goods from all over the world. I loved it! We had a blast!! It was really fun to learn about different kinds of foods and a variety of cooking and baking techniques. Our project leader talked about safety and mise en place and then let us run the project. Mise en place means everything in its place and you have to measure out all your ingredients before starting to cook. We, the 4-H members, decided on the timeline for the day, the order we would prepare and bake pastries, and we switched off on workstations: doing dishes, measuring, stirring, cooking, and baking. It was delicious.

The baked goods really were from all around the globe. From a South American recipe we made alfajores, a sandwich cookie with a caramel filling. Challah bread is a braided yeast bread from the Jewish culture that takes 2-3 hours for the dough to rise. Everyone knows about chocolate chip cookies and sugar cookies from the United States. Cremeschnitte is a delightful custard cream cake from Croatia that we made the custard from scratch on the stove. We tried to make egg tarts from Hong Kong but we didn’t get to try these because we accidentally put too many eggs in the crust. The kolczkis from Poland were really good and they were similar to a pinwheel cookie. Pavlovas remind me of marshmallows because of the flavor and their texture. They are a meringue and were really crunchy on the outside but really soft in the middle and melted in my mouth. Pavlovas are from New Zealand and were my favorite. The recipe had the wrong bake time though and we burnt the first batch which made them taste more like marshmallows on the fire.

At the next general meeting, we will be giving a group presentation about what we made. We each picked a different pastry to share with the club.

I would highly recommend other 4-H members learn about foods from other places you may find your new favorite dessert.

Why I love 4-H

I love 4-H because I can try different projects and discover new things. Last year I tried sewing, outdoor adventure, fishing and poultry. 4-H has taught me valuable skills.

4-H showed me new things about sewing. I made pillowcases and a stuffed pony. I learned about different symbols on patterns, how to use bias tape and fusible interfacing and how to sew on zippers. I sewed a reversible bag, a place mat, and a zippered pouch. I learned many new ways to sew but more importantly, I learned perseverance.

In outdoor adventure I learned about hiking. I learned about volcanoes, edible and poisonous plants, and hiking safety. We hiked inside an inactive volcano. I had a blast when we saw raptors on one of our hikes. This project also taught me perseverance because halfway through the hikes sometimes your legs want to come off. As a bonus, I hiked in front of the line with the older kids which helped me gain confidence. In my fishing project, I learned to cast off the pier. Fishing has taught me patience and how to appreciate nature. We spent quality time with my 4H friends sitting around a lake, a lagoon and a pier.

Lastly, for my poultry project, I learned about seramas and how to raise them. Poultry has taught me
about different breeds of chicken, their predators, adequate housing, and showmanship. I even built a
chicken coop. In this project, I became more patient.

My first year in 4-H has taught me a lot about sewing, hiking, poultry, and fishing. Aside from fun
projects, 4H has developed my patience, perseverance, and confidence. I learned a lot of lifetime
skills and enjoyed it.
